The Garuda Dzi bead is one of the most sought after Dzi beads and those of good quality are very rare to find. This is one of the finest we have come across as it has been through a 'Fire Burial' as well, which means it was placed in hot coals while being chanted over by the monks who make them. This imbues the properties of the symbols(s) deep within the crystal itself. You can tell by the mottled appearance or fine lines which is referred to as ‘Naga’ or Dragon skin.
The Garuda is a large, legendary bird-like creature with eagle qualities in Hindu, Buddhist and Jain mythology. He is the mount(vahana) of the Hindu god Vishnu and often acts as a messenger between man and the gods.
Often seen as a protector, Garuda can aid one by flying above the storm, allowing us to see the whole picture or issue(s) we may be facing rather than a view from the ground where our vision may be clouded.
The Dzi bead measures approx. 1 1/2" x 9/16" ,the Garuda symbol appears on both sides of the Dzi bead with the images reversed on each side and is drilled lengthwise for stringing.
